I’ll be honest. I didn’t know about the CVS “For all the ways you care” commercial until I read Holly Buchanan’s post on GrokDotCom because I almost never watch TV anymore. Holly asks a series of relevant and pointed questions that ought to make CVS think long and hard about what they hope to accomplish with this ad. When I was done reading Holly’s column, I clicked on the link she provided and watched the ad online.
Yikes.
I wouldn’t have thought it even possible to patronize caregivers and trivialize caregiving so thoroughly in the space of 30 seconds. I’m not even going near the gender angle except to note, once again, that a hefty percentage of caregivers are men–although you wouldn’t know it from the CVS ad.
Advertising sometimes misses the mark and sometimes even lands with a clunk. But this ad is in a class by itself. Caregivers deserve better.
