Developing a Plan B for Disaster Readiness

April 18, 2007

Here in northern New England, we’ve taken a real beating with the recent “Nor’easter.” Some people still don’t have power restored, and we are told that it may be several more days.

For most of us, the power and telephone outages and the property damage are frustrating inconveniences, but the situation can be far more alarming and difficult for a caregiver. As with so much else about caregiving, the key here lies in advance planning.

The planning itself should be fairly straightforward. You can do most of it by taking a mental tour through your caregiving day. What equipment and other care recipient supports will be affected by power loss? What will you eat if you can’t cook and and don’t want to open the refrigerator? How will you keep your care recipient dry, warm and safe until utilities are restored? Will you have to stay where you are?

The answers to questions like these will vary, depending on your location and the needs of your care recipient. But whatever your situation as a caregiver, you should take the time to put together your own Plan B. A severe storm is a good reminder.
