| Boomers Not Ready for Assisted Living… |
The Billings (Montana) Gazette recently reported that Boomers are not yet ready for assisted living.
Well, no kidding. The middle-aged are not the elderly The oldest Boomers (like me) turned 60 this year. It’s true that Woodstock is getting to be a long time ago, but that doesn’t mean our whole generation is ready to cash in.
Attitude aside, I guess there really is a story here: Boomers are now the decision generation when it comes to caregiving. As it becomes increasingly clear that Boomers are called upon to arrange care for aging parents, care facilities will increasingly be marketed directly to Boomers rather than to the people who will actually be living there.
This is a state of affairs that can last another 10-20 years, until it’s clear that our children are making care decisions for us. And good luck to them with that, by the way. Since about 1950, no one has had much luck moving the spotlight off us Boomers. I doubt that we will go to retirement and care facilities with any less fanfare than when we went to kindergarten, college, the military, marriage, careers or parenthood.
And anyway, right now we aren’t about to go anywhere! |
