“Often, your first introduction into the matters of Generation Sandwich comes in the form of your aging or ill parent needing help in the home,” says Elizabeth, creator of GenBetween. Elizabeth is a sandwicher who shares her personal experience as both a caregiver to elderly parents and a parent to young children in an effort to provide support – and lightheartedness – to others in the same situation.
Realization that you may be part of Generation Sandwich could actually come as a surprise. Elizabeth’s blog empathizes, with topics such as, Eight Things To Do Before You Get Your Sandwich Generation Membership Card. Highlights include good sense considerations before “membership” sneaks up on you, such as:
- Familiarizing yourself with basic structure of your parents’ finances
- Keeping a list of your parents’ physicians, medications and basic medical history, including dates of any surgeries or hospitalizations
- Taking a look at your area’s assistance resources. Ask questions such as: Who has had a good experience with a home health company or a medical equipment vendor? Are there companion/sitter agencies in your area? Do you know someone who has hired a sitter privately?
Could the lifestyle of this growing population be a little easy for us than for the generation before us? As the number of “membership cards” of Gen Sandwich grows, the numbers of blogs like GenBetween grow too, and that can only contribute to the landscape of resources and information.
