Time to learn CPR and the Heimlich Maneuver
If you’re a caregiver, or if you think you are about to become a caregiver, this is a good time to learn some things you probably should know anyway. In particular, I’m thinking about life-saving techniques that may have particular relevance for you as a caregiver.
Older people are often susceptible to choking. In this connection, you hear a lot about the Heimlich Maneuver, but you may not actually know how to do it. Follow the link here for simple instructions.
You also hear a lot about Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), for use in situations where someone has stopped breathing. With CPR, however, there’s more to learn than with the Heimlich. The link here will work as a reference and review, but I think you really should contact your local Red Cross chapter to find out how to get CPR training in your area.
The Red Cross site, by the way, also includes this story about a home caregiver who used CPR to save a life.
If you can’t imagine yourself saving a life, maybe it’s because you never learned life-saving techniques. If you don’t like to imagine yourself helpless in an emergency, maybe it’s finally time to learn those life-saving techniques.
