Tips for the Long Distance Caregiver

March 05, 2007

Torey Farnsworth has some great ideas about being successful as a long distance caregiver. Some of the suggestions are things most people think of readily on their own (gathering emergency contact information, paying attention to legal and financial needs, etc.) but others seem more like distillations of personal and professional experience.

Farnsworth, for example, recommends developing a family “plan of action” before the need arises. The plan should address as many contingencies as possible so that not every bump in the road will come as a complete surprise.

Another excellent suggestion is to set up–in advance if possible–a network of family, friends and neighbors who can check on loved ones frequently.

In my opinion, however, the most original (and perhaps most useful) suggestion is to keep a journal of your loved one’s care. Everyone involved in providing care will benefit from a reference that includes a history of care, medical conditions, recent injuries, personality changes, etc.

But please read Farnsworth’s whole list. I think you’ll find that every item on it is worth your time and attention.

Check out NIH’s (National Institutes of Health) book on Long Distance Caregiving. Great resource for LDCs!
