Not Just for Old Folks: Active Adult Communities Give Generations the Space to Live Together

August 06, 2006

Fitness centers, health spas and golf courses – those are the things that attract the boomer set – and communities are catering to the growing market for their tastes. As a result, more boomer couples, usually empty nesters with a parent living with them, are showing interest in Active Adult Communities, where parent and child live together or in proximity, both generations enjoying the benefits of a community that is not just for the old folks.

More boomers and their aging parents want to enjoy each other’s company, says David Schreiner, vice president for active-adult business development for the Michigan-based Pulte Homes’ Del Webb brand, the biggest builder of active-adult projects. “It’s an emerging trend in our business, though we haven’t kept numbers on it,” he said in recent press.

Boomers and their parents purchase homes across the street, down the block or around the corner in the same community as long as they age-qualify: that typically means 80% of their households have a member who is 55 or older and the remaining 20% to have a member who is at least 50.

Del Webb is scrambling to meet this need: Its web site lists 20+ communities opening this year, and that includes locations in Indiana, New Jersey, Illinois, not just the Sun Belt.
