Products that can help preserve a senior’s independence
George Mason University’s Department of Health Administration and Policy offers a program in Assisted Living and Senior Housing Adminstration. The director of the program, Andrew J. Carle, has released at list of senior-friendly devices and appliances that could make life a little easier for a lot of people—including caregivers and care recipients.
Topping the list is a 21st century pillbox that provides audio and visual reminders of when it’s time to take medication and can telephone for help if the reminders are ignored!
Also included is a medical call button (that will make the call automatically if it detects that the wearer has suffered a fall), a power jar and can opener, a talking thermostat, an oversized TV remote, a large-button cell phone, and a mailbox that sends a wireless signal when the mail arrives.
Products like these can do a lot to preserve an elder’s independence. I particularly like the pillbox, probably because one of the main reasons I became a caregiver in the first place was that my mother simply couldn’t keep her medications straight.
